Coffee Talk, SEProductivity.com, and MikeGannotti.com–What Happened And What's Coming Up

“Mikey, what’s happened to Coffee Talk? Are you blogging anymore?” These are just of the few of the questions I have been getting via Twitter, Facebook, Email, Skype, etc. With a number of folks hitting me with speculation I realize that I have been lax in not being ahead of the curve here so I wanted to set the record straight and lay out what is happening. Before I do though I just want to say thanks to all those who have reached out to me from the SharePoint/SocialMedia/Productivity community with genuine worry and concern. I am touched but happy to say there is no need to worry. I am not dropping off the map and there are exciting new things.

New Year At Microsoft Means Changes: For Microsoft our fiscal year ends June 30th. After the frenzy of year end closing here in the field that is then followed by family vacations, and for me TechReady in Seattle. Along with all that also comes business planning for the new year at breakneck speed and inevitable changes as we look at a local district level how we can best serve our district clients and from a technical perspective better support our district field teams. One area that we needed to address was flexibility on client face time and unfortunately having weekly Coffee Talk sessions live meant that I was effectively unavailable on Wednesdays. My management has been extremely supportive of my social computing activities and for this year even helping me to move things to the next level but in the end fact is my “day job” is as an immediate resource for district clients and field teams. With the weekly live broadcasting cutting in to that something needed to give and thankfully again I have great management that has helped me come up with some solutions.

Coffee Talk: Coffee Talk as a weekly show is a great concept. I truly believe that providing consistent weekly programming with interactivity that is a mix of solid information and fun is a must do by any company serious about social media as a vehicle for connecting with customers. In order though for it to be sustainable it takes dedicated social media evangelist resourcing. Brett Austin, Producer Tim, myself, and of late Brent Whichel have tried to bring a weekly program that would be beneficial to our clients and broader technical community. However, we have all recognized for some time that with the demands of daily work we weren’t able to do the format the justice due it. Couple that with the fact that it effectively removed me from the field one day a week and something had to change.

Sitting down we have taken a long hard look at the elements Coffee Talk, what had impact and what didn’t have as much. The basic elements that consistently seemed to resonate were the Productivity News Segments, the “How To” demos, special guest segments, and the mobility content, as well as the live interaction. With these things in mind Coffee Talk and it’s content is not going away, it is morphing and in some respects growing! Kicking off later this month we will be introducing:

  • The all new Coffee Talk show! Coffee Talk as a live show will take place once a month with the idea of gathering higher quality content, demos and such. Each monthly episode will primarily focus around a single topic/guest. We will dive deeper, be more focused, and hopefully be delivering a more valuable show.
  • Weekly Productivity News. We are finalizing the set day and format but we will be filming a weekly, easily consumable, productivity news segment that will be viewable on demand or as a podcast. Shooting to kick off on August 30th with special guest, Microsoft MVP Dux Raymond Sy!
  • Dedicated Windows Slate and Windows Phone wikis. This past year we launched the Windows Slate wiki and site traffic trends have shown its popularity and we will continue to build that out. Additionally, we are launching a Windows Phone wiki as well. Instead of short one offs by Producer Tim on Coffee Talk we will have more focused, on demand video content produced. (I think though Tim will be glad to deliver them Smile )

SEProductivity.com: If you visit SEProductivity you will see the navigation changing and all new areas being set as placeholders. The live portion of content delivery may be scaling back but other areas are moving full steam ahead and the content offerings of the site are exploding as my management has set up an actual team this year to focus on enhancing the site and its effectiveness. I am no longer a Lone Ranger Smile On tap for this fiscal year:

  • Productivity Virtual Conferences. Last years trial run was a little rough around the edges but well received and had demonstrable impact within our district. So we circled the wagons, looked at what worked and what didn’t and will be delivering a number of additional ones over the upcoming year.
  • Productivity Road Show and Webisodes. Last year Brent Whichel and myself spent the first half of our fiscal year delivering a series of events in the major cities here in the Southeast District. Well this year were are tuning up a new round of content and getting ready to hit the road again. We will also be taking advantage of the travels to build Productivity Adventure Webisodes similar to what I wrote up two years ago in part 3 of my 3 part blog series on “The Social Media Evangelist.” These one hour webisodes should offer high impact content in an easily consumable, and fun to watch, format. I am particularly excited to have a chance to tackle these. We may not have a technical team to help, or budget for high end equipment, but we will have some fantastic content, partner, and Brent and myself with our crazy imagination.
  • Revamped navigation. We are streamlining the site offering both top level drop down navigation that targets technical user (focusing on products) as well as left side navigation targeting business users.
  • More topic coverage. We have additional folks coming online to help produce content and we are setting up corresponding wikis to help them deliver.
  • Business Enablement Demos. This went over really big last round so we have several cycles teed up and ready to deliver starting in September.
  • Monthly Newsletter. Our site committee has committed to the delivery of a monthly subscription newsletter to provide a concise way to catch up on the best and latest content as well as upcoming events.

MikeGannotti.com: This past year as I focused on SEProductivity and district social media efforts my own private blog really languished and a lot of folks have asked me about it. Well this year I am trimming it back and refocusing it. In the past I blogged here on my own time vs company time and covered a range of technical topics introducing several characters along the line (Social Media Samurai, Michael on the Go, Productivity Adventures). With SEProductivity becoming more professional in its approach I need an outlet for my craziness not to mention a place to cover technical things outside of my product coverage at work. So I am going back to my non-work hours approach to my blog and will use it for tech coverage outside of my job and folks who have asked me about my characters and where they have gone will be pleased to see them return on my own blog.

In Closing: Things are changing on my blog, SEProductivity and Coffee Talk but I think you will find them changing for the better. This August I will be busy implementing those changes so I ask for your patience but am hopeful you will stay around for what's coming. So for now it’s back to the grindstone and time to get cranking on getting things rolling. Again to all those who have reached out to me around the sudden absence of Coffee Talk… it’s all good Smile See you back online soon!

Join Me July 20th For Our First Ever SEProductivity SlateCast Live From Times Square

The evenings of July 20 and 21 I will be in New York City as part of a client onsite. As I will be located near Times Square, taking only my Asus Windows 7 Slate, and since it is a rare opportunity opportunity to get to travel to such a location I thought what better time than to kick off our new SEProductivity SlateCasts than this. Similar to webcasts, SlateCasts allow for the transmission of a highly scalable video stream, using IIS Smooth Streaming, served up from the SEProductivity SharePoint site. Audience interaction is provided by a Facebook social stream web part.. However, rather than desktop from a stationary location like we do for Coffee Talk, the SlateCast is done in a mobile fashion. Using only a Windows 7 Slate and a 4G aircard we will be able to take you all with us on location, virtually.

I have also set up a corresponding page on SEProductivity to contain the stream and it can be found here.

So join us this July 20th from 8:00-8:30pm eastern time for our inaugural SlateCast live from NYCs Time Square! We will be talking SharePoint, Office 365, Windows Slates, and more as we walk through the sites and sounds of Times Square.

PS – If you are in NYC and want to join us let me know and you can be a part of the show live and after we wrap join us for a SharePint. Smile

Check Out The New Microsoft Media Platform Content Manager For SharePoint And IIS Smooth Streaming

I saw this pop up online and got all giddy! Winking smile

Quite a few of my clients have asked about integration solutions that bring together IIS smooth streaming with SharePoint and also handle server side transcoding. Up until now such an effort, while supported via hooks, has been a purely custom one. Well now Microsoft has put out some open source goodness to help organizations get a jump start. From the post:

The newly released Microsoft Media Platform Content Manager pulls together an end-to-end video workflow that allows you to create live streaming events, transcode on-demand content, manage and publish video, edit video, and insert mid-roll advertisements. This open-source release can be used by enterprises, educational institutions, and broadcasting companies to manage their video assets using a lightweight and highly-customizable solution built on Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and Microsoft Media Platform (MMP) technologies, including Silverlight 4, IIS Media Services 4.0, and Expression Encoder 4…”

Take a look and get started with the Media Platform Content Manager.

The Enterprise Enablement Conference Is A Wrap! Some Parting Thoughts

This Tuesday the Greater Southeast District put on its first ever Enterprise Enablement Virtual Conference (facilitated off of our SEProductivity site as well as via Marketing registration). The event reached 526 registered attendees with attendees from the southeast United States as well as additional Microsoft accounts throughout the USA and worldwide. The conference consisted of six channels (each “channel” was comprised of a Lync session that was moderated and maintained all day long) with 6 sessions per channel throughout the day for a total of 36 sessions. We had tremendous support from the SharePoint community with speakers not only from Microsoft but also partners/MVPs/Community Leaders from across the United States, as well as from Europe and Egypt. In addition to the turnout for the event itself the conference spurred increased access to SEProductivity site content as well. Some interesting statistics in this regard:

On June 6th, the day before the virtual conference we had 5,897 page views on SEProductivity, a pretty good stat. The day of the virtual conference we had 19, 980! The average number of page views a day over the preceding 30 days was still a healthy 3,321 daily. 1 day post conference (yesterday) 7,331.

Today our district folks met to discuss lessons learned and how to improve the quality of such events moving forward. While there were some intermittent technical issues those seem to have been ironed out and I am very excited at the prospect of us now continuing forward with similar, new and improved, events!

To all the attendees, thank you for your patience! To all the presenters thank you for being troopers and hanging in there.

Below are a few comments from the event. See you all for the next one this fall!

  • “Building A Enterprise Knowledge Center was a great walk through to get the detail into the pieces that can be configured together to present aggregated content.”
  • “Creating simple dashbaords using out of the box web parts--good examples to use in the real world.  The beauty is using OOB web parts without complicated coding processes.”
  • “Web Forms: Very Interesting presentation. Love Creating Simple Dashboards: Relevant and Interesting Info.”
  • “Ruven's Metadata was really entertaining/easy to understand/helpful, K2's HR presentation was great as well with the visuals and real world application, and I liked Michael Gannotti's Knowledge Center and the step-by-step approach. I definitely learned a great deal.”
  • “I thought the Building an Enterprise Knowledge Center Step by Step was good.  It was short to the point and gave useful information that could be applied in a practical manner.”

How are Companies Using SharePoint?
In this session, Derek Weeks will do a broad analysis of the SharePoint market based upon a SharePoint Community survey from August 2010 with results compared to the January 2011 responses. In August 2010, 885 people responded to the survey about how they are using SharePoint. In January 2011, we captured and compared about 800 new responses. The goal of the survey was to:
• Determine the breadth and depth of SharePoint usage in the market today
• Understand how companies are driving value out of their implementations, and
• Identify challenges related to their investment You’ve got SharePoint setup. You’ve allocated some sites to hold content for the main areas of the company and you’re feeling pretty good about yourself… well, kind of. How are other companies solving their business problems with SharePoint? Is there anything major that you’ve overlooked. The presentation includes a drill down on SharePoint in the real world using the following survey findings:
• Adoption of SharePoint
• Widespread Deployment
• Using SharePoint for Portals, Workflow, and Process Management
• Creating and Modifying SharePoint Workflows
• Challenges with SharePoint Implementations
• Exposing Legacy or Other Application Data to SharePoint
• Reflections on SharePoint 2010

Understanding Metadata – Working with stakeholders to build the taxonomy
When it comes to defining the site columns and content types for a project, the first step is to help your stakeholders understand the concepts of metadata so that they can picture how they are going to organize their documents without using folders. Once this is accomplished, you can start to inventory the types of documents that are going to live in SharePoint, and then explain the function of site columns and content types. In this session, we will discuss some methods that have proven to be successful for explaining these concepts and then organizing the taxonomy. You will see how to use tools that help users to inventory their documents and capture the metadata. You will see how to conduct workshops that help you and your clients to organize this information and then document the taxonomy in a form that can be shared, reviewed and easily modified. At the final stages, you will see how the required document libraries begin to emerge as part of this process.

Enterprise ECM running as a SharePoint Service
Traditional ECM is an expensive solution for SharePoint that takes a substantial amount of time and services to "drill" into SharePoint and maintains the old line "The Archive is the Center of the Universe" approach. It perpetuates proprietary software and requires the consumers of the documents (users) to navigate different UI's that are expensive to purchase and maintain and takes their focus from completing the business task at hand to deciding where to look for the document and parsing which system (ECM, SAP, email....) they "might" find that document in. With ecspand for SharePoint, there is now a single repository for users to surface ANY corporate document. This simplifies their efforts and takes an already compelling ROI and turns it into a stunning productivity enhancement that safeguards critical corporate communications, while streamlining the user experience and returns the users focus to their business tasks. We have now entered the paradigm of “ECM as a service“, which is largely invisible to the user, configurable by the administrator, demanded by your CFO and applauded by your Chief Counsel.
